Memory verse: “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour”. 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT).
We live in an age where everything is on a fast lane. Changes are taking place in “split seconds” , and so as humans, we need to be aware of the things around us bearing in mind that as Christians, we are the target of the devil just as our memory verse has detailed the issue to us.
Now, let’s look at some key words from this passage which are of course the major discourse of our devotional today. “ Sober” and “Vigilant.”
To be sober_ means to have self-control and be not playful, but serious; and on the other side, _vigilance_ implies that we should stay alert, watchful and always on guard. The Bible is warning us to be watchful against our arch enemy who is the devil. He’s not tired, because he knows that his time is short. He’s even employing his cohorts to come and torment the elects of God – you and I. So we must, as a matter of fact, heed this ever timely warning. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy.
Have you ever wondered why devil wants to devour us? It’s simply because he wants to make us miss the mark and lose living with God eternally in heaven, just to keep him company in the place of torment created for him as a result of his disobedience. Jesus earlier announced this to Peter in Luke 22:31 “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat…” (KJV). He’s not happy that Christ came and gave us redemption through the Cross; so he goes about making sure we fail and make God angry so we too should miss heaven just as he has already missed it.
What then should be our consolation? As Christians and believers, we have Christ as our model because we are living our lives patterned after His way of life. For the fact that Christ could not be held down by the devil, we too cannot be held down. We have the promise of preservation and protection from Him. Hear what Christ says in John 17:15 _“I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one (Devil)”._
Summarily, on our part, what we need do is keep renewing our minds and be watchful, guarding our lives against anything that takes us away from God. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. When we play our parts, He (Jesus) plays His part too. With this, we are sure to reach the finish line successfully.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, please help me always to guard my life against anything capable of creating a loophole for the enemy to creep into my life. I believe your promises for me. Thank you for helping me from now until I reach my ultimate aim – heaven, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
